SAMWU demands Matlosana to terminate security contract immediately
16 Sept 2015

Klerksdorp - The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) is livid after learning of the exploitative and dangerous working conditions that security workers in the City of Matlosanaare faced with on a daily basis, KoenaRamotlou, Deputy General Secretary of the union, said in a statement on Sunday, 13 September 2015.
Ramotlou said this relates to a lucrative security contact that the municipality has signed with wherein the service provider is paid over R 1 million for security services at various water plants within the municipality. “So far (the company) has received over R25 million from the municipality, money which we believe has not been well spent.”
He alleged the company is only concerned about maximisation of their profits and milking the municipality thus hampering on service delivery for the people of Matlosana. “It is endangering the lives of its employees by issuing them with toy guns thus making them prone to attack by criminals and unable to fulfill their duties.”
Ramotlou said with the recent spate of police killings, criminals will undoubtedly not think twice to attack and kill these workers who are given toy guns. “They have no means of protecting municipal assets which they are tasked with protecting and most importantly they are defencelessagainst attacks from criminals.”
According to him, an audit done on the contract indicates that the company is in breach of its contractual obligations to the municipality due to its under-performance and none-performance in relation to the contract. The audit report further recommends that the contract be terminated.
“It therefore makes no sense why the municipality continues to drag its feet instead of immediately terminating the contract and save taxpayers’ money, money that can be used for bettering the lives of the people of Matlosana through the delivery of quality municipal services.”
He said SAMWU demand that Matlosana terminate the contract immediately as municipal property to the value of almost R1 million had been stolen under their watch. They further demand that the municipality should recoup taxpayers’ money that has been lost as a result of the company’s failure to fulfill its contractual obligations with the municipality.
According to Ramotlou, SAMWU will demand termination of all security contracts by municipalities across the country. “Security services for municipal assets will always be required by municipalities hence there is no need to outsource this service. Municipalities should directly employ people who will be responsible for this service on a permanent basis.”
